Enslin’s visit in the Exumas

Sun Feb 12th 2023 - Hunkered down in Little Bay on Guana Cay but could not escape the 20 kn west wind overnight, there was nowhere to hide! We find the Exumas has few anchorages that provide west wind protection and they are always packed (and perilous). At least Rob made us some tasty sourdough bread!

Mon Feb 13th thru Fri Feb 17th 2023 (44 NM; 8 hrs) Motor sailed to Emerald Bay Marina, wind directly behind us, which Muti doesn’t like. We docked inside the protected harbor, the first thing we noticed is NO WIND - without discussion we decided to spend the week for a reprieve from the incessant wind. The marina is well protected with floating concrete docks. A week of bliss. Nice and relaxing, completed a couple of boat chores. Oh my, the blackened mahi-mahi sandwiches at the nearby Grand Isles resort are gastric heaven.

Sat Feb 18th 2023 (12 NM; 2.5 hrs) - Onwards to Georgetown. When leaving the marina we passed a National Geographic ship coming in that looked so cool. In Georgetown, the annual regatta is ramping up, every anchorage is full, not a fan. Did some provisioning in Georgetown at Exuma market. This time of the year the market is swept clean of fresh produce pretty quickly. The supply ship stock is unpacked on Tuesday mornings and pretty much depleted by lunch time. Of course, the National Geographic ship that we passed earlier seems to have first dibs on supplies, we saw boxes and boxes of amazing fresh produce marked for that ship that we were not allowed to touch. Not looking so cool anymore! Surprisingly, we found peppers, romaine lettuce, milk and eggs. The market has a dinghy dock to accommodate all the 300+ boats in the area. Chaos!

Sun Feb 19th 2023 - an exciting day; Magda and Chris flew into Georgetown and cabbed it to the Exuma market dinghy dock. The short dinghy ride to Muti was wet but our guests had learnt from their previous visit and their luggage was packed in dry bags - good plan. Socialized on the boat that evening, had a few bevies, turkey pasta and some sourdough bread Rob had made for us. Great to share Muti again with Chris and Magda.

Mon Feb 20th 2023 ( 38NM; 8 hrs) - Left for Long Island at sunup. Motor sailed as wind was in our face; it seems to be the trend in Exumas. Chris started the fishing off by catching half a fish! Magda and Chris destroyed a couple of barracuda thereafter. (Was it a friendly competition?). Barracuda are linked to ciguatera, an illness caused by eating fish that contain toxins produced by a marine microalgae called
Gambierdiscus toxicus. We accordingly catch and release them. We anchored  in Thompsons Bay. Very quiet bay, quite the change from Georgetown!

Tue Feb 21st 2023 - Took a walk across to the east side of the island and strolled along the beach. The east side of the islands are a little angry with crashing waves and coral. Chris and Rob thought they would snorkel the coral reefs looking for lobster but chickened out. We found a tiny grocery store where we were able to provision and stopped by Sou’ Side restaurant for the best guava rum punches and fish tacos. And the local Sands beer is not bad either.

Wed Feb 22nd 2023 - Thompsons Bay. What the hell did we do today? Must have been a relaxing day to not remember any details. Gerda does remember enjoying a ginger beer with Magda.

Thu Feb 23rd 2023 (25 NM; 4 hrs) - Left for Calabash Bay which is in the northern tip of Long Island. Once we arrived there, Gerda’s birthday was celebrated with pancakes and papaya. Later we had an early dinner of tasty grouper fingers at the resort. According to Magda and Gerda the pina colada’s are to die for.

Fri Feb 24th 2023 - Magda, Rob and Gerda went for a long walk on the beach, while Chris did a long beach swim. The water is so clear; however it is void of marine life. Our dinghy ride  back to the boat took a spontaneous exploration detour into the little lagoon behind the resort to  check out the sea life. The water clarity is astounding. All we could spot was a juvenile black tipped reef shark and a ray. On our travels we stopped at a recommended restaurant, owned by Rodney. Its a short walk on a dirt path from the lagoon (and none of us had any shoes) to the little house where he hosts lunch/early dinner, but only if you have a reservation which we didn’t. He was kind enough to serve us drinks and we promised we would be back again sometime (after we make a reservation). We stopped by the resort again for another great lunch. Back on the boat we all decided to take a dip in the clear water cut short by an inquisitive shark, most likely a nurse shark. But hey, when one hears the Jaws music one removes oneself from the water.

Sat Feb 25th 2023 (33 NM; 6 hrs) - Left early to return to Emerald Bay Marina. Once we were docked we walked over to Grand Isle resort for a mahi mahi sandwich overlooking the infinity pool and the bay. Hung out on the boat for the last night of the Enslin’s visit.

Sun Feb 26th 2023 - Chris and Magda left for the airport in the morning. So sad to see them go but when you aren’t retired you have to go back to work! The rest of our day was taken with laundry and chores and of course the obligatory mahi mahi sandwich.

Peace out.
